Plants: Our Native Residents

During the summer, the Santa Ynez Hills showcase a variety of vibrant plants. Here are some you might encounter:

  1. California Live Oak: This evergreen oak tree is a predominant shade tree in the area. The leaves are oval-shaped, somewhat cupped, and have spiny edges. They are approximately 2 inches in length with a shiny green top and yellowish-green underside. Live Oaks typically grow in canyons and on north-facing slopes, providing food and habitat for many animals.
  2. Chaparral: This dense shrubland features plants like manzanita, chamise, and ceanothus. Chaparral is adapted to dry summers and wet winters, with many plants having small, leathery leaves.
  3. Shepherd’s Purse: Common in waste spaces, this plant is from the Mediterranean region and blooms year-round. It has very small, white flowers with short stems and distinct heart-shaped, flattened pods containing many seeds.
  4. California Poppy:  Pictured above, these vibrant orange flowers add splashes of color to the hillsides, creating the perfect opportunity for a summer photo session. The grayish-green, fern-like leaves support the bright flowers that open on sunny days. As the state flower of California, it is protected by law.

Animals: Our Wild Residents
